On a spring afternoon a big thunderstorm near Modena in northern Italy produced three tornadoes one after another. The strongest travelled about 17 kilometres past Castelfranco Emilia, flattening farm buildings, ripping off roofs and snapping power pylons.

Good to know

It was rated F3, one of the strongest tornadoes ever recorded in Italy; a second tornado the same afternoon hit San Martino Spino near Mirandola.

Thirteen people were hurt across the three tornadoes, but nobody was killed.
