On an October afternoon a tornado travelled 21 km through the northern suburbs of Paris, hitting Ermont, Eaubonne and nearby towns. Rated EF2 with winds up to about 220 km/h, it toppled three tall construction cranes and tore roofs off homes.

Tornadoes in big-city suburbs are very rare in France, and this one was part of an outbreak of at least five tornadoes that day.

A construction worker died when a crane fell, which is why the event is remembered as one of France's most serious tornadoes in decades.
