On the Whit Monday holiday a violent tornado swept through the town of Großenhain in Saxony in the afternoon. In about a quarter of an hour it damaged thousands of roofs, flattened parks and forests and left the old town looking like a building site.

Good to know

It was rated F3 and the damage trail stretched for tens of kilometres from Saxony into Brandenburg.

Around 40 people were injured and one child died when a tree fell on a car, which is why the town still remembers the day every year.
