Huanggang tornado

On a July evening a wide tornado formed near Ezhou in Hubei, China, crossed the Yangtze River and ploughed through the crowded centre of Huanggang, damaging a university, hotels and hundreds of homes. It grew out of storms fed by the remains of a typhoon.

It was the first tornado in Hubei province since 2021 and one of the few ever to cross a large Chinese city centre.

Many people were hurt, making it one of China's worst tornado disasters in years.
