As a typhoon passed near the coast of Shizuoka, a tornado raced from Makinohara into the town of Yoshida in about a minute. It overturned trucks, ripped roofs off shops and damaged nearly 1,500 homes, and more than 80 people were hurt.

Makinohara had already been hit by smaller tornadoes in 2021 and 2022, so locals knew the drill.
