Early on a Saturday morning a tornado dropped out of a winter storm front and raced through Papatoetoe, a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand's biggest city. It lifted roofs, smashed windows and toppled trees and power poles, damaging about 1,200 homes in only a few minutes.

At a freight yard the wind knocked over heavy shipping containers.

New Zealand gets a few small tornadoes every year, but one this damaging in a large city is rare.
