Jersey tornado

Just before midnight, as Storm Ciarán hit the Channel Islands, a tornado about 550 metres wide came ashore on the island of Jersey and crossed the eastern parishes for 14 minutes. It tore roofs off homes, destroyed caravans and forced dozens of families to leave their houses.

Good to know

It was rated IF3, the strongest tornado in the British Isles since the Birmingham tornado of 2005.

The same storm dropped hailstones up to 8.5 cm across on Jersey, as big as tennis balls.
