Narda tornado

On a June evening a tornado formed from two merging thunderstorms in Austria and crossed the border into Hungary near the village of Narda, close to Szombathely. In half an hour it travelled about 20 kilometres, damaging roofs and knocking down sheds.

Good to know

The funnel was often invisible: people mostly saw the tornado from the dust and debris it lifted off the fields.

It is one of the few Hungarian tornadoes rated IF2 on the International Fujita scale.
