Stalybridge tornado

Late at night, during the winter storm Gerrit, a tornado formed over the eastern edge of Greater Manchester and ran for almost 7 km through Dukinfield and Stalybridge. In about five minutes it ripped roofs off around a hundred houses and brought down walls, trees and chimneys.

British tornado experts rated it T4 to T5 on their own scale, roughly as strong as an F2 tornado.

Britain gets around 30 small tornadoes a year, more per square kilometre than almost any other country, but most are weak.
