Late on a winter afternoon a tornado moved through the city of Los Ángeles in southern Chile, damaging dozens of homes and a factory along a path about 5 km long and cutting power for thousands of people.
The very next day another tornado hit the nearby port city of Talcahuano. Before 2019 many people in Chile did not believe tornadoes could happen there at all.
This event made Chile's weather service start to study and warn about tornadoes.
